Favorable climate and a strategic location at a major trade route crossing by the river attracted settlers as far back as the Old Stone Age; Celtic and Roman settlement has also been documented here. The most significant site is the Modrá Archeoskanzen and the Great Moravia Memorial in Staré Město, part of a national cultural monument of the Czech Republic. The area is part of the Slovácko ethnographic region, rich in folk costumes, customs, and hody festivals with costumed processions.
It includes the largest number of municipalities of any district in the region (48, six of them towns).
